Planning a Hybrid Routine
Teachers have mastered planning: lesson plans, planning a schedule, planning for a sub, planning for interruption, etc. However, when hybrid or online teaching was the only option, our sense of planning vanished.

Tips for Hybrid Class Planning
The following are ideas that might help you focus when planning for your hybrid class.
- Chunk your time and plan a routine. If you are a secondary teacher, this is probably a planned schedule that has been handed to you. If you are elementary, you might have options. Some elementary teachers stick with the same schedule they had in the face-to-face classroom, even though the way they do it is different. Others have reorganized schedules to match and mesh with others in their school. Whatever your case, start chunking your daily routine into a recipe to help you plan.
- Remember when you were a new teacher and staying on schedule was a daily goal? That is somewhat where you have landed in our new normal for 2020-21. Having a “recipe” for learning will help you be more consistent with what your hybrid teaching format looks like. Soon the routine will be second nature.
- Don’t reinvent the wheel. What have you already learned that works well for you and your students? Keep that in your plans. Consider creating a survey in Google Forms for your students where they can share their thoughts.

- Reflect on what works and make plans for next time. Establishing a routine for hybrid teaching is similar to establishing a routine in your classroom with some necessary differences.
